Choosing the Best Family Lawyer

Everyone thinks they know how to choose a family lawyer. Everyone thinks they know the best family lawyers. That can’t be true, can it?

If you have never had the pleasure of hiring a lawyer before, you might find yourself a little intimidated. If you live in the Newmarket area and need a divorce lawyer, then contact us. But remember, you are in control of who you hire and what you expect from them. It is important to remember that you are interviewing the lawyers and they have to show you that they are good enough to work for you. You have the ball in your court at the moment.

Many feel they don’t know how to choose a family lawyer because they do not know anything about the law.

Get An Initial Consultation

The first thing you need to do is call a few lawyers and set appointments for some initial consultations. This is where you discuss the outline of your case.

It is important for the lawyer to have a basic understanding of your case. In order to decide whether it is even something, they feel comfortable taking on. This is also your chance to ask the lawyer some questions that will help you determine whether they are the right lawyer for you.

Can You Work Well Together?

It is important to make sure that you and the lawyer are on the same page. You should also have the feeling that you will work well together. During this initial consultation, you should be able to get a feeling as to whether or not they will be easy to communicate with.

Some people simply do not mesh well together and that is perfectly fine. However, since you have a lot riding on this case, you need a lawyer you can work with.

If you are going to be interviewing a few different family lawyers, you might want to bring a pen and paper with you so you can take some notes. This way, you will not confuse them, which could possibly lead to you hiring the wrong lawyer.

Some common questions may include:

• How long have you been practicing law?
• How many family law cases have you worked on?
• What is your success rate?
• Have you had any cases similar to mine?
• Will you have any associates working the case or will it just be you?
• What is your hourly rate?
• When do you expect payments?
• Can you set up a payment plan for monthly bills?
• What would be your approach to my case?
• What do you feel the odds are for winning my case?
• Do you have any suggestions for things I can do to better my odds at winning?
• How long do you think it will take to get a decision on my case?

Take A Moment To Reflect

Go home and think about what you have learned. You want to make sure that you are not making a decision too quickly. By taking a day to consider your options, you will have a better chance at selecting the best family lawyer for your case.
