When you get home at the end of the day, do you constantly fight with your spouse or do you just ignore each other completely, barely acknowledging each other’s presence?
All relationships have their rough patches, but if you’ve been experiencing constant conflict for five or more years, you may want to take some time to think about your current relationship. Constantly arguing, or avoiding each other is not grounds for an annulment in Canada. However, many people consider separating or getting a divorce if they are constantly at odds with each other. How do you know if you’re constantly at odds with your significant other?
Here are some warning signs that may be cause for you to re-evaluate your current relationship.
Money Squabbles
Do you constantly question your spouse’s spending and budget habits? Does your partner constantly scoff at the frivolous things you spend your money on? Do you disagree on where to invest, or what to save for?
Many couples argue about money and finances, but if you’re constantly fighting over the all mighty dollar, it might be time to re-consider who you’re spending your money with.
The Kids
Although you love your kids, children can be a cause of stress in any marriage. How a child is disciplined, taught, and taken care of can be cause for disagreement between couples.
However, if you’re constantly arguing over parenting issues, your kids are torn between who’s side to take – because they really don’t want to take any one side – or your kids ask often why you and mommy, or daddy are always fighting – you may need to start thinking about your relationship and it’s impact on your children.
Work/Life Balance
We all strive for a balance between the time we spend at work and the time we spend enjoying the fruits of our labour.
However, if you’re constantly arguing with your spouse about spending too much time at the office, with friends, or anyplace but with your family, it could be a sign of a deeper underlying problem. You or your spouse is using work or other people to keep you or your spouse away from the troubled relationship.
If that’s the case, it’s time to seriously think about your relationship, and what to do about it.
Division of Labour
All families struggle fairly dividing the household chores among each member of the home. But if your significant other has threatened to go on strike, or makes a big stink every time they do something, or you are constantly hounding each other over the chores, it may be time to consider what the real reason is for the fight.
All of the above are symptoms of a broader issue – failing to work together as a team. That’s ultimately what constant conflict is in marriage, because you’re not working together anymore.
And worse, you may actually be working apart.
If you’re not working with your partner – or worse – constantly working apart – it may be time to re-evaluate your relationship and it’s team members.
