People will go to great lengths to avoid paying child support, but this is downright disgusting: Earlier this week it was reported that Federal prosecutors have accused a Canadian man of avoiding his child support payments, by stealing the identity of a younger brother who died as an infant decades ago.
The trial for 58-year-old Leslie Lyle Camick, (who was living in south-central Kansas) was rescheduled after a hearing Wednesday and is now set for Nov. 19. Camick is accused of using his dead brother’s birth certificate to flee Canada in 2006 to avoid overdue child support, back taxes and other legal difficulties.
He has been indicted on:
• Mail fraud: A maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison without parole and a fine up to $250,000
• Aggravated identity theft: A mandatory two years to run consecutively to any underlying sentence and a fine up to $250,000
• Immigration document fraud: A maximum penalty of 15 years and a fine up to $250,000
• Making a false statement to the U.S. government: A maximum penalty of five years and a fine up to $250,000
• Making a false statement on a bank application: A maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000
• Bank fraud: A maximum penalty of 30 years and a fine up to $250,000
